The Honorable Robert F. Hale, former Department of Defense Comptroller, is currently a Fellow at Booz Allen Hamilton.  The Hon Mr. Hale has almost four decades of experience in defense related financial management.

Prior to joining Booz Allen, he was nominated by President Barack Obama and confirmed by the Senate as Under Secretary of Defense (Comptroller) from 2009 to 2014, acting as the Department’s Chief Financial Officer and the principal advisor to three Secretaries of Defense on all budgetary and fiscal matters.  During the Clinton administration, he served as Assistant Secretary of the Air Force (Financial Management and Comptroller) from 1994 to 2001.  During his tenure – the longest serving Assistant Secretary for Financial Management in Air Force history – Hale helped to streamline Air Force financial business processes and improve base-level financial services.  During his career he has also served as Executive Director of the American Society of Military Comptrollers (2005-2009) and Assistant Director for National Security at the Congressional Budget Office (1980-1994).

The Hon Mr. Hale grew up near Fairfield, CA.  He earned his BS in mathematics and statistics, as well as his MSc in operations research, at Stanford University.  He also holds a MBA from the George Washington University.  He is a Certified Defense Financial Manager (CDFM) and holds a Level III Certification in financial management from the Department of Defense.  Hale is a fellow of the National Academy of Public Administration and has received numerous honors and awards.  Most notably, he has been awarded the Department of Defense Exceptional Public Service Award, the Air Force Distinguished Service Award, the National Defense Medal, and the GAO/OMB/Treasury award for lifetime contributions to federal financial management.
