New Partnership Helps Remove the Financial Barrier to Mental Health Care
Through a new partnership with Cohen Veterans Network (CVN), an AFAS grant will help cover eligible out-of-pocket mental health care costs for Air Force and Space Force families receiving care through the 23 Steven A. Cohen Military Family Clinics or via telehealth.
“No Airman or Guardian should have to choose between their mental health and their finances,” said retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Ed Thomas, AFAS CEO.
This partnership helps remove financial barriers to care while strengthening the readiness and well-being of our Airmen, Guardians, and their families.

Standing with Guam After Super Typhoon Bavi
Following Super Typhoon Bavi, AFAS responded with more than $172,000 in assistance to over 360 service members and their families, helping meet immediate needs as they began recovering.
This was the second time this year, Airmen, Guardians, and their families stationed in Guam have faced the devastating impact of a major storm.
Earlier this year, AFAS provided more than $1.5 million following Typhoon Sinlaku. When disasters strike, we’re committed to being there for our military families—whenever and wherever they need us.
Connecting with Our Enlisted Force at the AFSA Summit
AFAS is once again proud to participate in the Air Force Sergeants Association (AFSA) Summit, held August 7–12 in Orlando, Florida.
Throughout the event, our team is connecting directly with enlisted Airmen, Guardians, leaders and partners to increase awareness of AFAS programs and hear firsthand about the challenges and evolving needs facing our Force.
These conversations help ensure our programs and support continue to meet the changing needs of our Force.
Honoring Gen. Saltzman & Mrs. Saltzman
As Gen. Chance “Salty” Saltzman officially retires as the second Chief of Space Operations on August 13, we celebrate his extraordinary service to our nation and commitment to the Guardians and families of the U.S. Space Force.
Alongside him, Jennifer Saltzman has brought her own passion and steadfast commitment to supporting military families. As members of the AFAS Board of Trustees, Gen. and Mrs. Saltzman generously shared their time, experience, and wisdom to help guide our mission and champion those we serve.
We are deeply grateful for all they have given to AFAS, the Space Force, and our military community. We wish them all the best in this well-earned next chapter. Semper Supra!
Did You Know – Help with Funeral Expenses
AFAS provides financial assistance with qualifying funeral expenses following the loss of a dependent of an eligible Airman or Guardian. Assistance is also available to eligible retirees who have lost a dependent spouse and widow(er)s who have lost their retired service member.
“Losing a loved one is difficult enough without the added financial stress that funeral expenses can bring,” said AFAS Chief Operating Officer retired CMSgt. Kris Spencer.
“Our goal is to help ease the financial burden so families can focus on what matters most during an incredibly difficult time,” she added.
